Michigan State basketball seniors undecided on additional year of eligibility

Ahead of the final home game of the year, MSU announced it would lift its mask and vaccination policies on Sunday at the Breslin Center.

It will be a unique senior day for MSU’s scholarship trio of Marcus Bingham Jr., Gabe Brown and Joey Hauser as all three have the opportunity to play another season thanks to a COVID eligibility waiver. Whether or not this is the end for them, Spartans head coach Tom Izzo said he would appreciate the class for their dedication to the program.

“There were a million chats with every guy,” Izzo said. “Gabe is still the best, because there are always people who question my relationship with Gabe. My relationship with Gabe is probably the same as I’ve had with a lot of guys.

“…Joey, I like who he is, what he represents and who he is as a student. I tell you he’s still a very good player if he could just get over a bump.

“Marky, it’s just a question of maturity for me. Everyone matures at a different age. If it was a normal time when you were allowed to wear red shirts, he would surely have put on a red shirt for his first year. I tried to convince him for various reasons.

“But who knows. There are still opportunities for these guys, here and elsewhere, G League, NBA, Europe, whatever. We’ll see what happens at the end of the year.
