How to Enable Subtitles in the Apple TV App

The Apple TV app is not only available on Apple devices like the Apple TV 4K, it is also available for download on other platforms including Amazon FireTV, Roku, Sony PlayStation, Xbox and many smart TV brands… but the process of enabling subtitles is not so obvious. Here’s how.

The Apple TV app can be used to watch Apple TV+ Original TV Shows and Moviesas well as the iTunes Store catalog of TV shows and movies for purchase and rental, including access to the user-purchased library.

On the Apple TV device, you can simply swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the audio track and subtitle settings for the currently playing video. This is idiomatic for the tvOS platform and users naturally know what to do. The steps to do the same on the Apple TV app on other platforms aren’t as intuitive.

How to Enable Subtitles on the Apple TV App

  1. While watching a video, press the down arrow button on your remote or gamepad.
  2. This will bring up the Subtitles and Audio menu. Make sure “Subtitles” is selected at the top of the menu and press the down arrow to navigate the language options.
  3. Select the language of your choice, in this example ‘English’.
  4. You can now press the up arrow button on your remote or gamepad to close the audio options menu.

If you want to customize the look of subtitles in the TV app, go to the app’s main home screen and navigate to the settings screen. From here you can select Accessibility -> Subtitles and change the subtitle design according to your preference.
