Google’s TV app is finally coming to Canada

Google is finally bringing the Google TV app to Android smartphones in Canada and 14 other countries.

This app replaces the Google Play Movies & TV app and also allows users to download and watch movies and TV shows. One of the benefits of the now Google TV app is that it now has better curation and shows content from other streaming services you subscribe to, like Netflix and YouTube, for example.

You can also save the movies and shows you search with Google to your Watchlist, which then appears in the Google TV app. Although this is a minor change, since most people probably use Google as their default search engine, this is very useful.

If now you’re thinking, “where did I hear the name Google TV before?”, that’s because it’s also the name of the interface that powers the new Google Chromecast. If you have the Google streaming key, this app should work the same.

The other notable feature of the new app is that it also works as a remote control for Google’s latest Chromecast and other Android TVs. It’s a smart move and it’s probably an effort by Google to attract more users to its mobile app. It’s a strategy that Roku is also exploiting more in its latest OS updates.

When the Google TV app is on the same Wi-Fi network as an Android TV, you’ll also be able to turn on your TV, navigate menus, and use your phone’s keyboard to enter passwords. Users can also access it from a Android Quick Settings mosaic in the notification shade once it is deployed.

The 14 countries in which the new TV app is launched are:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • UK

Launching this app in more countries should help clean up Google’s TV-related apps a bit, but it’s still a pretty fractured ecosystem.

As always, you can rent and watch content through the YouTube app, and on some platforms like Roku, that’s your only option. Android phones and TV are now mostly aligned under the Google TV brand, but even though everything now looks like Google TV, some devices are still called Android TV. iOS users can use both YouTube and Google Play Movies & TV.

It’s a bit of a mess, and unfortunately, since YouTube is everywhere, I still rent the majority of my content through the platform. Hopefully Google will find out about this situation as soon as possible.

At the moment, the Google TV app hasn’t rolled out to any of my devices. Keep your eyes open in the weeks to come.
