Google TV app gets Entertainment News Highlights feed

Google TV was a big overhaul that replaced the Play Movies & TV app on Android, and it now adds a “Highlights” tab that serves as a “personalized entertainment news feed” and brings Material You to life.

The first tab of the Google TV app is now called “Playlists”. It will display news, reviews, and other articles from around the web related to movies and shows that interest you. Stories open in a custom Chrome tab that has a share button in the top right corner. After reading, you can quickly go to the list of this content to read it, rate it or add it to your watchlist.

Read articles about the entertainment you love or follow the next big thing, all in one place.

It’s basically Google Discover, but only for media. The stories that appear in the feed feature large covers and smaller carousels of “Related Highlights”.

Meanwhile, the “Home” is now called “For You” with the “Top Picks For You” and “Keep Watching” carousels located here. The store is next, while ‘Library’ and ‘Watchlist’ seem to be integrated into the new ‘Your Stuff’ tab.

Elsewhere, the Android app now takes advantage of Material You with a taller bottom bar.

9to5Google’s review

The Google TV Highlights feed is actually a really good idea for users who want a more focused version of Google Discover that only shows articles related to movies and shows. If the stream is populated based on your existing Google Play library, chances are it’s highly relevant to your interests and/or favorite actors. Depending on its accuracy, this could make the Google TV app a bigger destination.
