Apple adds live news channels to TV app for iOS and Apple TV – TechCrunch

After teasing the feature in September, Apple is adding Live News support to the TV app on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV – 9to5mac spotted for the first time the new section. For now, it is quite limited as it only supports a handful of channels for US users.

If you are using the most recent versions of iOS and tvOS, the feature should now be live. I am using iOS 11.2.5 on my iPhone and the new section is available without any additional updates.

In the main ‘Watch Now’ tab, if you scroll through your ‘Next’ queue and top recommendations, there’s a new ‘News’ section. It offers six different live streams – CBS News, CNN, Fox News, Cheddar, CNBC and Bloomberg.

If you tap on any of these icons, it launches the live stream in each of these apps. The TV app uses deep links to directly access the live stream.

And if you don’t have the app yet, your device will ask you if you want to download the app from the App Store. This new feature should generate downloads for these six companies.

Once you have these apps on your device, you can ask Siri “Hey Siri, let’s watch Bloomberg” so you don’t even have to open the TV app in the first place. Hopefully Apple will bring this live news feature to other countries.
