The 2022 Europa League quarter-finals feature multiple continental powerhouses as the tournament progresses to the last eight. The March 18 draw offered some tasty clashes.

Tournament Favorite Barcelona will face the Bundesliga team in 9th place Eintracht Frankfurt. The German club have already eliminated their Spanish opponents, Real Betis, in the round of 16. Barcelona will host the second leg of the series.

Premier League side West Ham earned a tough draw against a talented French side Lyons, which is underperforming in Ligue 1 (9th place), but which has a star-studded workforce. A Hammers run to the final would include a potential semi-final against Barcelona if both teams progress to the last four.

RB Leipzigwho received a bye to the quarter-finals after the ban imposed on Russian clubs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will face the Italian team Atalanta in what should turn out to be a high octane match.

Rangers will love their chances to continue their magical European run against Sporting Bragawho surprisingly eliminated AS Monaco in the round of 16 and recently beat Benfica in the Portuguese league.

Was the Europa League quarter-final draw seeded?

There was no seed at the quarter-final stage of the competition. It was an open draw with no country protection, no seeds and no other conditions imposed.

Teams were seeded in earlier rounds, based on qualification (e.g. group winners, group runners-up, playoff winners or Champions League knockout), but from the quarter-finals any team could be drawn against any other team.

The seeding was considered in the round of 16, with the group stage winners in a pot drawn against the teams that qualified in the round of 16 playoffs.

Could teams from the same country have met in the quarter-finals?

From the quarter-finals, there was no longer any “protection of the country” as expressed by UEFA. In other words, clubs in the same league could have been drawn against each other.

The only two teams in the quarter-finals from the same country are from Germany: RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt could have faced each other in the quarter-finals, but they were not drawn. They could still face each other in an all-German final.

Given the variety of teams present in the Europa League, a draw between two teams from the same country is not common. That hasn’t happened in the past two seasons.

The last time this happened was during the 2018-19 competition. Valencia were drawn against Villarreal at the quarter-final stage, and they won 5-1 on aggregate.

When was the 2022 Europa League quarter-final draw?

The draw for the remainder of the 2022 UEFA Europa League tournament bracket took place on Friday 18th March. It happened just a day after the round of 16 second leg.

  • Date: Friday, March 18, 2022
  • Weather: 8:30 a.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CET)
  • Diffusion: Headquarters of CBS Sports (USA), DAZN (Canada), UEFA.tv

The draw took place at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland. It was broadcast live on UEFA.tv.

UNITED STATES: CBS Sports HQ host Poppy Miller and analysts Ian Joy and Luis Garcia provided analysis of the UEFA Europa League draw.

Canada: The Europa League draw was worn by DAZN in Canadahome of the three European Cup competitions.

It was the last Europa League draw of this 2021-22 season. Indeed, the semi-final draw also took place at the same time.

This ensured that each team now knew their potential opponents every step of the way to lifting the trophy.
